Gosport Inner Wheel Club

The aims and objects of Inner Wheel are to promote true friendship, to encourage the ideals of personal service and to foster international understanding.
It all began on 10th.January 1924 in (of all places) the Turkish Baths in Manchester, when Mrs. Margaretta Golding formed a club called Inner Wheel, consisting of the wives of the Manchester Rotarians. From these small beginnings the organisation grew. In 1934 there were 79 clubs, and they formed the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland.

Inner Wheel is a voluntary organisation which has 25,000 members in Great Britain and Ireland. It was formed in 1924 in Manchester to complement Rotary and took the name ‘Inner Wheel’ to emphasise the strong link between our two organisations.

Inner Wheel has grown to become a worldwide organisation. Despite a diversity of interests, ages and of culture, members work together and for each other. For example, after the Tsunami, the Gosport club was able to send money directly to the Inner Wheel Club of Colombo so nothing was wasted on administration and essential equipment was bought for devastated homes.

The objects of Inner Wheel are Friendship, Service and International understanding. Members achieve these goals through many club events, which combine fundraising, personal, service and fun. The women folk of Rotarians, of Inner Wheel members and Rotaract qualify for membership.

The Gosport Club received it’s charter in 1946 and at present (2008) has 33 members. It meets on the third Tuesday of every month, except August, at the Methodist Church Hall in the High St. Lee-on-the–Solent at 7.00 pm.
